Brief Introduction to the Imperial Mausoleums of the Later Zhou Dynasty

The Imperial Mausoleums of the Later Zhou Dynasty lie in Guodian Town, Xinzheng, Henan Province. As a major imperial tomb complex of the Later Zhou, the last regime of the Five Dynasties, it houses the tombs of Emperor Guo Wei, Emperor Chai Rong, Emperor Chai Zongxun and imperial clan members of the dynasty. It is now a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.

The Later Zhou lasted only nine years from 951 to 960. Though short-lived, it boasted clean governance and strong national strength, laying a solid foundation for the unification of the Northern Song Dynasty. Adhering to the tradition of frugality advocated by its rulers, the mausoleums feature simple layouts and plain structures, inheriting the funeral rules of the late Tang Dynasty and pioneering the architectural style of Northern Song imperial tombs.

Well-preserved amid frequent wars in the Five Dynasties period, the complex serves as precious physical evidence for studying the politics, rituals and funeral systems of the era. It also marks the historical transition from the Tang to the Song Dynasty. Moreover, the mausoleums stand as a cultural landmark in the Central Plains, bearing the memory of virtuous monarchs and carrying profound historical and cultural values.
